Program Overview

The Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) was established to provide monthly income to survivors of retired military personnel upon the retiree's death when retired pay stops. Survivors of members who die while on active duty, and survivors of members recalled to active duty from retirement who die while on active duty, may also be protected by the SBP.

Services

INTRODUCTION TO SBP:

For an overview of the Survivor Benefit Plan, visit: https://militarypay.defense.gov/Benefits/Survivor-Benefit-Program/Overview/

SBP TIMELINE:

Retiring service members are required to complete and submit all SBP documentation prior to their official retirement date. We recommend that you complete your election NLT 60 days prior to your date of retirement. SBP appointments can only be made within 180 days prior to official date of retirement.

ONE-ON-ONE BRIEFINGS:

All retiring service members are required to attend a one-on-one Survivor Benefit Plan briefing with a certified Air Force SBP Counselor prior to retirement. The purpose of this briefing is to: 1) To ensure that retiring service members are fully aware of Survivor Benefit Plan coverage options and to make a suitable selection, and 2) To establish a retirement pay account.

  • Your appointment will be denied if we do not receive your required documents within 2 business days of scheduling.

  • Your appointment will be denied if it is not within 180 days of your official date of retirement.

  • Failure to complete SBP brief with an SBP Counselor and submit the DD2656 will result in a delay in your retirement pay and automatic enrollment in SBP full coverage regardless of marital status.

*IMPORTANT: All documentation should be encrypted. You can send them via your government encrypted email account or through DODSafe (https://safe.apps.mil/), ensuring you select ‘encrypt all files’.
